After a tense debate, pundits advise Biden to step down, but Gavin Newsom dismisses running

Following his unimpressive performance at the first debate on Thursday night, a number of Trump-critical commentators openly questioned on Thursday whether President Joe Biden should withdraw from the 2024 presidential race and allow the Democratic party to select a replacement candidate. However, one of the front-runners, California Governor Gavin Newsom, dismissed the idea as a “non-sequitur.”

The notion was rejected by California Governor Gavin Newsom, whose name has been mentioned for months as a possible Biden replacement should he withdraw. In response to questions from reporters in the spin room about whether he was “ready to replace Joe Biden,” Newsom stated that he was “very proud of the president” and that it was “a non sequitur” to consider running for office in November. Later, the governor of California spoke passionately in support of Biden on MSNBC, saying that “fear” is “unhelpful and needless… We’ve got to have this president’s back…You don’t give up after a single performance. What sort of gathering is that?

Following the debate, David Axelrod, the senior strategist for President Barack Obama’s election campaign and a former White House official, stated on CNN that “there are going to be discussions about whether he should continue.”

Mehdi Hasan, a former political analyst and broadcaster for MSNBC, also criticized Biden for his performance in the debate, saying that he “must go” and that anyone who thinks that “Joe Biden at this stage of his life is the best person that Democrats have to offer against Donald Trump, against a fascist,” is “deluded.”
