'The Bodyguard' and 'Night at the Museum' actor Bill Cobbs passes away at the age of 90

Bill Cobbs, the seasoned character actor who rose to prominence as an elderly guy on cinema, has passed away. He was 90 years old.

Cobbs’ publicist Chuck I. Jones claimed that the actor passed away on Tuesday at his Inland Empire, California, home in the company of family and friends. According to Jones, the most likely cause of death is natural causes.

Cobbs, a native of Cleveland, starred in movies including “The Bodyguard,” “The Hudsucker Proxy,” and “Night at the Museum.” In a brief part, he made his big-screen debut in the 1974 film “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.” With almost 200 film and television credits, he went on to become a career actor. Most of those came in his 50s, 60s, and 70s, when TV producers and directors kept coming back to him to give minor but important roles a worn-out and aged soulfulness.

Cobbs hardly had the kind of big roles that are memorable and garner accolades. Rather, Cobbs was a well-known and enduring common man who, despite his limited screen time, made an impact on viewers. For the series “Dino Dana,” he was awarded a Daytime Emmy Award in 2020 for outstanding limited performance in a daytime program.

Born in Cleveland on June 16, 1934, Wilbert Francisco Cobbs enlisted in the United States Air Force and served for eight years. Cobbs sold vehicles in the years that followed his service. He was asked whether he wanted to be in a play one day by a customer. In 1969, Cobbs made his stage debut. He started his acting career in Cleveland theater before relocating to New York and joining the Negro Ensemble Company, where he starred with Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis.
