The military alliance announced on Wednesday that Mark Rutte, the prime minister of the Netherlands, has been officially chosen to serve as the next secretary general of NATO. This announcement comes at a crucial moment when the alliance is trying to balance strengthening its own security with aiding Ukraine in its protracted conflict with Russia.
His appointment follows the announcement last week by Klaus Iohannis, the president of Romania, who was his lone opponent for the job.

According to an alliance statement, Rutte will begin his new role on October 1st, when current NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg’s 10-year term ends. On Wednesday, Stoltenberg expressed his “warm welcome” to the announcement of his successor.

He wrote on X, “I wish him every success as we continue to strengthen NATO.” Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, also congratulated the incoming head of NATO on X. Zelensky remarked, “I know Mark Rutte as a strong, principled leader who has shown his decisiveness and vision on many occasions over the past years.”
Zelensky continued, gesturing toward the conflict in Ukraine, saying, “We anticipate that our joint work to ensure the protection of people and freedom throughout our entire Euro-Atlantic community will continue at good pace when Mr. Rutte takes over this post from @JensStoltenberg in October.”
The highest ranking foreign civil official in the alliance is the secretary general. In addition to serving as the organization’s main spokesperson, the individual in that position heads all of NATO’s significant committees and oversees the international staff.
NATO, which Rutte will take over, is working feverishly to shore up its own security while also assisting Ukraine in fending off Russia’s incursion. Aiming to avoid upsetting Moscow and intensifying the worst battle on European soil in decades, the alliance is treading carefully as it increases military spending and rearms.
