NBA Finals: Boston Celtics vs. Dallas Mavericks, Game 5: Kristaps Porzingis is available

It’s unclear how much Porzingis will play against the Dallas Mavericks in the series, but head coach Joe Mazzulla stated before tipoff that they “expect to see him tonight.” The 7-foot-2 Latvian initially suffered a posterior tibialis dislocation in his left leg during the Celtics’ Game 2 victory over the Mavs when he collided with Dallas center Derek Lively II in the third quarter. He came up limping and didn’t look right for the remainder of the game.

Although it might be a stretch to call Porzingis “active” in Game 4, he did not play in Game 3. Before Boston’s Game 4 defeat, head coach Joe Mazzulla stated that Porzingis was “not quite there” in terms of starting but might play in “very specific instances if necessary.”

The specifics of those events are unknown (probably only to Mazzulla), but none of them happened in Game 4, when the Mavericks easily defeated the Celtics 122-84. Porzingis didn’t get any playing time because the championship wasn’t at stake.

Porzingis was better prepared for the Celtics’ huge opportunity on Monday night by taking a break despite the loss. They are playing the Mavericks at home and have a 3-1 advantage. To take that trophy home, they just need one more victory, and Mazzulla is working nonstop to make it happen.
