2024 Open in U.S.

The 2024 U.S. Open is underway, with three days of immaculate play left at Pinehurst No. 2, one of the most famous courses in the country. Friday’s action in North Carolina features a crowded leaderboard with players vying for the title of third major of the year. 156 golfers are vying for a trophy and a sizable winner’s award, and the grounds are crowded with spectators.

As the top three players in the world going into the U.S. Open on hot streaks—Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and Rory McIlroy—everyone was expecting a three-horse race. In the recent week, Scheffler won both the Masters and the Memorial. Schauffele secured his first major victory at the PGA Championship, while McIlroy holds a commanding third-place ranking in the Official World Golf Rankings.

McIlroy is the only one below average among those three players. In fact, he and Patrick Cantlay share the lead through 18 holes. After an uncommon round that was over par, Scheffler is six strokes behind Schauffele, who is five back. However, there are still some notable players leading the pack: rookie Ludvig Åberg, veteran Bryson DeChambeau, rising star Tony Finau, and even Sergio Garcia are all within four strokes of the lead.

With so much skill in the field, the winner at Pinehurst will undoubtedly take home the trophy and an unprecedented $4.3 million winner’s share.

Apart from the aforementioned household names, Tiger Woods is the center of attention once more. He is participating in his first U.S. Open since 2020 and hopes to make the cut for the first time since 2019 (and the second time since 2013). Tiger fought against the cutline on Thursday and will do so again on Friday.
