The frontman of the rap rock band Crazy Town, Shifty Shellshock, 49, passed away on Monday at his home. The cause of death is not yet known. Shellshock was first introduced to Crazy Town co-founder Bret Mazur in 1992. The band initially recorded under the name the Brimstone Sluggers, but by 1999, they had added members Rust Epique, James Bradley Jr. (aka JBJ), Doug Miller, Adam Goldstein (aka DJ AM), and Antonio Lorenzo “Trouble” Valli. The band’s debut album, “The Gift of Game,” was released in November 1999, and the band went on tour with Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The third single from “The Gift of Game,” “Butterfly,” was released by Crazy Town in October 2000. The song flawlessly combines two genres with a sample of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Pretty Little Ditty” and Shellshock’s easygoing rapping style, “Come my lady, come-come my lady, You’re my butterfly, sugar baby.” The song became the band’s biggest hit and peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in a row.
The band disbanded after Crazy Town’s second album, “Darkhorse,” (2002), did not spark the same passion. Following that, Shellshock focused on his solo career. He worked with Paul Oakenfold on his 2002 hit song “Starry Eyed Surprise,” which peaked at No. 41 on the charts around that time. “Happy Love Sick,” Shellshock’s debut solo album, was somewhat successful in Europe when it was released in 2004.
In addition to appearing on multiple reality series addressing the subject, Shellshock has been transparent about his battles with addiction. These shows included two seasons of VH1’s “Celebrity Rehab” and two seasons of its spinoff, “Sober House.” He lost consciousness in 2012 and went into a coma, but he eventually made a full recovery. In 2022, he was most recently taken into custody for DUI.
