
Ratan Tata is an Indian industrialist, philanthropist and the former Chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group. Born on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai, India, Ratan Tata is the son of Naval Tata and Soonoo Commisariat. Tata is the grandchild of Jamsetji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group
Ratan Tata completed his schooling at the Campion School in Mumbai and later went on to earn a degree of architecture at Cornell University in the United States. After finishing his studies in the United States, he returned back to India after which he joined his company Tata Group in 1962. He started his career at Tata Steel, a subsidiary of the Tata Group working on the factory floors in Tata Steel, one of the main companies of the group.
Ratan Tata succeeded J.R.D. Tata as chairman of the Tata Group in 1991. The Tata Group increased its global reach and diversified into a number of new businesses under his direction, including software, automotive, and hotel. Also, he started a number of significant purchases, such as the ones of Jaguar Land Rover and British steelmaker Corus.
Ratan Tata is well-known for his humanitarian activity and has taken a leading role in numerous charitable endeavours. He established the Tata Trusts, one of India’s biggest nonprofits that works in fields like rural development, healthcare, and education. In Mumbai, he also founded the National Centre for Performing Arts and the Tata Institute of Basic Research.
Ratan Tata withdrew from his position as chairman of the Tata Group in 2012, and Cyrus Mistry took his place. He still continues to lead the organisation as chairman emeritus and is still actively involved in a number of projects.
Ratan Tata has won various honours and distinctions over the course of his career, including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, two of India’s highest civilian honours. A number of foreign organisations have also acknowledged him, including the University of Cambridge, which conferred an honorary doctorate in law upon him.
